The Jura is a by-product of the plication of the Alps. The first phase formed somewhat flat hills which were almost eroded by the time the second phase along today's Mittelland caused a swelling of several high ridges.
The lake district is a part of Switzerland's Mittelland, created by the scree masses from the alpine glaciers. When the glaciers retreated at the end of the last Ice Age, the Bielersee, Murtensee and Lac de Neuchâtel as well as small, extensive hills (rest of the glacial moraines) remained. These and the Jura are what determine the landscape of our region today.
At sunset, the view from Chasseral (1,607 metres above sea level) across the lake district and the Mittelland as far as the Alps is only one of the highlights to be found around our Lodge.
The Bielersee, Lac de Neuchâtel, Murtensee and their connecting canals, Biel with its museums and great places to go, through to the Taubenloch Gorge which transports you away from the city of Biel directly to the Bernese Jura. All this is a stone's throw away, and easily accessible.
The cultural history of our region and the lack of mass-tourism complexes and institutions mean you get to see a "real" part of Switzerland. Immerse yourself in the world on the linguistic boundary...
